Zero Liquid Discharge

When discharge must move toward zero.

Some sites cannot discharge liquid effluent, or need to recover as much water as possible from it.

Unisavour Industries Limited approaches zero liquid discharge as an integrated recovery objective — combining treatment, concentration and residual-management stages selected for the specific effluent.

In short

What is zero liquid discharge?

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is a wastewater-management objective in which a facility recovers water from its effluent and leaves no liquid discharge, with the remaining dissolved solids recovered as a solid residue for appropriate handling. ZLD is not a single machine: it is an integrated treatment train that may combine pre-treatment, membrane concentration, evaporation and crystallisation, depending on wastewater characteristics and recovery requirements.

The challenge

Why ZLD needs careful engineering

Recovering the last of the water is the hardest part of the treatment train.

  • 01

    Concentrating chemistry

As water is recovered, dissolved salts and contaminants concentrate, changing how later stages behave.

  • 02

    Energy and complexity

Thermal stages add energy demand and operating complexity compared with conventional treatment.

  • 03

    Residual management

Recovered solids must be handled and disposed of appropriately.

  • 04

    Stable feed

Recovery stages depend on consistent, well-treated feed from the upstream ETP.

Engineering approach

How a ZLD system is approached

Start with the complete water balance, then recover water at the least demanding stage possible.

  1. 01

    Map the water balance

Understand every stream, its volume and where water can be avoided or reused.

  2. 02

    Characterise the effluent

Dissolved solids and specific contaminants decide the recovery route.

  3. 03

    Optimise upstream treatment

Stabilise the ETP so recovery stages receive consistent feed.

  4. 04

    Engineer recovery stages

Select membrane concentration and thermal stages for the effluent.

  5. 05

    Manage residuals

Plan the handling of recovered solids and support long-term operation.

Process pathway

A zero liquid discharge concept

  1. 01

    Effluent pre-treatment

Physico-chemical and biological treatment prepare the effluent for recovery.

  2. 02

    Membrane concentration

Membrane processes recover water and concentrate the remaining reject stream.

  3. 03

    Evaporation

Thermal evaporation recovers further water from the concentrate.

  4. 04

    Crystallization

Remaining dissolved solids are crystallized for separation.

  5. 05

    Water reuse

Recovered water returns to process and utility use.

A ZLD concept, not a fixed design. Whether each stage is needed, and in what form, depends on wastewater characteristics and the recovery requirement.

Compared

Wastewater recycling and ZLD compared

Both recover water. They differ in how far recovery goes — and in what that demands.

A general comparison. The right objective for a site follows from its water balance, effluent chemistry and applicable requirements.

Common questions

What buyers ask about zero liquid discharge.

When is ZLD considered?

ZLD is typically considered where regulations or site conditions do not permit liquid discharge, where water is scarce and recovered water is valuable, or where effluent cannot practically be discharged after conventional treatment. It is not the default answer for every industrial site.

What does a ZLD system include?

Depending on the effluent, a ZLD system may include conventional effluent treatment, membrane-based concentration to recover water, thermal evaporation of the concentrate, crystallisation of the remaining salts and handling of the solid residue. Recovered water is returned to process or utility use.

Is ZLD right for every industrial site?

No. ZLD involves additional stages, energy and operational demands. An evaluation of the water balance, effluent chemistry and discharge requirements should establish whether ZLD, partial recovery or wastewater recycling is the appropriate objective.

Can an existing ETP become part of a ZLD system?

An existing ETP often forms the pre-treatment for a ZLD system. Its performance and stability need to be reviewed first, because recovery stages depend on consistent feed quality.
